A Good Old Fashion Oil Animation
The oil and gas industry has relied on 3D animation to help explain how downhole tools work for decades. In the beginning, these animations were made by engineers and heavily prioritized technical accuracy at the expense of visual quality and abstract storytelling. We at Motion Giraffx believe in the value of a technically sound step-by-step process video... but we are also artists. Inspired by the history of where oil and gas animation all started, our team crafted this downhole tool walkthrough for Cavins Corp's target audience.
The Challenge: Visualizing Downhole Equipment
The downhole tool operates in an environment that’s impossible to capture with traditional video footage. The challenge was to break down the complex mechanics and physics happening inside the tool in a way that would instantly and beautifully communicate the complicated process while maintaining technical precision.
Our Solution: Visualizing Downhole Equipment
We designed a 3D animation that includes cutaways, particle simulations, directional arrows, and liquid effects to show the intricate workings of the tool. From the separation of gas and sand to the fluid dynamics within the downhole system, every detail helps to easily explain the operation. Realistic textures and motion effects take it a notch up, making the animation both informative and engaging.
Sounds complicated, right? It is. We don't pretend to be experts of your business from the get-go. Making sure the story is clear and the engineers are happy is a process!
Once the script is approved, we hand-sketch the storyboard for client review. As you can see, the storyboard helps us flesh out the details in how it works and how we will show it. This process is a cost-effective way to prevent major revisions down the road!
