What Engineers Catch in a Houston 3D Animation Storyboard

When a Houston energy or industrial company orders a 3D animation, an engineer usually has to confirm that everything on screen is physically correct before it goes public. The timing of that review matters more than most schedules account for. If it happens after the animation is rendered and the engineer finds a problem, the fix is not a tweak. The model gets rebuilt, every frame gets rendered again, and a project that was supposed to be finished can gain two or three weeks.
I have been making 3D animation in Houston since 2014, and a late engineering review is the most common reason I have watched a schedule slip. This post covers what engineers tend to flag, where the review belongs in the timeline, and what to send before kickoff.

Who approves the video on a Houston project
The person managing the animation project and the person who can approve its technical content are often two different people. On most of the projects I run, marketing manages the project. They write the brief, hold the budget, and set the date. Approval of the technical content sits with an engineer, sometimes a regulatory lead, and occasionally legal. If that approver is not named at kickoff, their review tends to happen whenever someone remembers to send them a link, and by then the animation may already be rendered.
So before you set a date, ask two questions inside your own company. Who has to sign off that the equipment on screen is correct? When can that person look at a storyboard? Put both answers in the brief, so the studio can build the review into the schedule instead of discovering it at the end.
This is not a Houston-only problem, but it comes up more here. Energy, industrial manufacturing, and aerospace are my three largest sectors, and in each of them an engineer commonly approves the animation before it goes public. I learned to ask for the approver’s name on the first call because it’s possible to get burned by not asking.
The cost of a late correction
Not all review notes cost me the same. A pacing note, such as “hold this shot longer,” changes the timeline and takes an afternoon. A correctness note, such as “that valve does not open that way,” changes the geometry. Geometry sits under the rig, the lighting, the camera moves, and every rendered frame, so a correctness note that arrives at render can mean my team rebuilds all of it.
Boehm and Basili’s review of software defect research found that fixing a problem after delivery costs about 100 times more than fixing it during design on large projects. On small projects the ratio is closer to five to one. An animation is a small project, but a five-to-one penalty can still be a week you did not plan for.
So I ask clients to separate the two kinds of review. Have the engineer check correctness at the storyboard, where a fix is a redrawn frame. Have marketing check pacing at the animatic, where a fix is a retimed shot. If both kinds of notes arrive in the same round, you can burn one of your revision rounds on a version nobody could have approved anyway. My quotes include two rounds as standard, and two is usually enough when each round has one job.
The SLB Cameron frac fluid delivery animation is the clearest example I can point to. My team locked more than twenty storyboard frames before a single pixel rendered. SLB then sent corrected models twice inside an 18-day window, which meant two full re-renders. The project still shipped on time, because the corrections only touched geometry. The shots and the story had already been approved on paper.
What engineers catch
An engineering review checks whether the equipment on screen could exist and whether it works the way I show it working. These are the kinds of notes I have had come back on technical animation. Each one can be caught on a drawing, and each one has a document that can settle it.
- Flow direction reversed. Fluid or gas moving the wrong way through an assembly. A P&ID or process flow diagram settles it.
- Actuation out of order. Steps happening in a sequence the tool cannot physically perform. The operating procedure settles it.
- An operating condition that cannot exist. A tool shown at a hole size, depth, or pressure it is not rated for. The spec sheet and the well schematic settle it.
- A part that is not in the product line. A valve or fitting that looks right but is not something you sell, usually because it came from a stock model library. Your own CAD settles it.
- PPE wrong or missing. A figure in frame without the flame-resistant clothing, gloves, or eye protection the environment requires. Your site safety standard settles it.
- Color implying a rating. A color-coded band or housing that signals a pressure or temperature class the product does not hold. Product literature settles it.
- Scale that reads fine to marketing. A component one or two sizes off, invisible in a slide deck and obvious to anyone who has handled the real thing. A dimensioned general arrangement drawing settles it.
Every item on that list is a note about what the object is, not how the shot is paced. That is why they are cheaper to fix at the storyboard than at any later stage.
Review stages in a 3D animation schedule
My 3D projects typically run four to eight weeks from kickoff to delivery. The stages are the same on most of them, and only two are engineering gates.
- Script. Terminology, product naming, and any factual claim in the voiceover.
- Storyboard. The primary engineering gate. Every note in the list above can be checked here, on a drawing, in an afternoon.
- Animatic. Engineering confirms motion and sequence. Marketing reviews pacing.
- Animation. My team builds the models, rigs the moving parts, and animates every shot against the approved animatic. No review here, because nothing is being decided that was not already decided on paper.
- Render. The machines turn the animated scenes into finished frames. This is the stage a late correction sends you back through.
- Color and audio. Marketing only. No correctness note should be arriving this late.
A storyboard, the way I build one, is one drawn frame per shot, made so an engineer can mark it up. For the Cavins downhole gas separator my team hand-sketched the frames. Those sketches are where we worked out how the tool separates gas from liquid, before anyone opened 3D software.
An animatic is the storyboard set in motion, with rough timing and camera moves and none of the finish. It is meant to look unfinished. Gray models, flat lighting, and placeholder text are all normal at this stage, so if you have never seen one before, do not judge the final quality by it. Its job is to let your engineer confirm the sequence still reads correctly once things are moving, and to give marketing its first real look at pacing.
The review itself needs a few rules. Shootsta’s August 2026 guide to corporate video review found that a two-minute piece takes an editor four to eight hours to cut. The approval loop around it can take two to three weeks. Their fix is to name one approver, collect notes in one place, and cap the rounds. I use the same rules. On technical work, I want the one approver to be the engineer and the round they own to be the storyboard.
What to send before kickoff
None of this should require a process change on your side. One email before kickoff with six things in it usually covers what I need.
- CAD, in whatever format you have. My team works from STEP, IGES, SolidWorks, and Inventor exports. Starting from your real geometry is the best way to keep item four off the list above.
- P&IDs or process flow diagrams for anything moving fluid or gas.
- Well schematics or general arrangement drawings, so scale and operating environment come from a document instead of an artist’s judgment.
- Spec sheets with the actual ratings, including pressure, temperature, and hole size where they apply.
- The failure-mode document, if one exists. Knowing what the product must never do is one of the fastest ways to avoid animating it doing exactly that.
- The name and calendar availability of the person who will approve it. This is the item I see left out most often, and it may matter most.
Much of that list may not normally leave your building. I have worked under NDA since 2014, including for energy majors and defense suppliers. If a program is export controlled, tell me at first contact so I can scope who touches the files before anything transfers.
Naming the approver early
Name the approver before you name the deadline. If you take one thing from this post, take that. Find the person who has to approve the technical content, then put them on the storyboard review invitation instead of the final delivery email. It costs nothing, and it means the corrections that might otherwise force a rebuild can get made on a drawing instead.
One last point, because this post has Houston in the title and some of you are reading it while choosing a local studio. For most of the work I have described, where the studio sits does not change the review. The storyboard, the documents, and the approver’s calendar all travel over email. Location starts to matter when the approver wants to walk the yard with the animator, or when the source files cannot leave a controlled environment.

Wherever the studio is, local or not, the question to ask is the same. Ask where the engineering review sits in their schedule, and ask what happens if it arrives late. Any studio offering 3D animated services in Houston should be able to answer both on the first call. I would rather answer that question up front than have you find out in week six.
