Scientific Drilling Magnetic Ranging: Relief Well 3D Animation
A counter on screen ticks down from 90 ft to 1 ft, and that shrinking number is how Scientific Drilling's film shows a relief well finding a leaking one. Operators, drilling engineers and intervention specialists are the audience, and Motion Giraffx had two minutes to make a job done far below the surface feel precise.
The film opens on the stakes of a leaking well: costs climb, operations stop and lives can be at risk. A dart-and-golf-ball analogy sets the difficulty of the target. Then the 3D animation shows MagTrac MWD passive magnetic ranging keeping the bottom hole assembly on bottom, followed by the Blackshark active magnetic ranging tool scanning magnetic signatures. After each log the relief well turns closer to the target casing, and a drill bit finally mills into the pipe to seal it. The film closes on Scientific Drilling's range of services.
The craft call was the distance counter. Ranging is a measurement problem, so the numbers fall step by step, 62 ft, 31 ft, 15 ft, as the two ranging tools take turns. An engineer reads progress at a glance without needing the subsurface drawn to scale.
When the work happens too deep to film, 3D animation lets us put a camera there. We would start with the measurement and build the picture around it.
